An Australia wide ban on the release of balloons and the use of helium to inflate balloons.

Unite the states and territories for a national ban on the release of balloons and the use of helium to inflate balloons.

Why is this important?

Released balloons end up as litter - somewhere - and threaten wildlife. Balloons are 32 times more likely to kill a sea bird than pieces of hard plastic when ingested. Wildlife such a turtles and platypus die from starvation, entanglement or choking. Balloons are known to travel hundreds of kilometres over land and ocean. Without helium, balloons would not be released.

Reasons for signing

  • There’s no need for balloons to be released & the environmental damage is scary. Why it hasn’t been classified as littering already I’ll never understand. Helium is also a finite resource that is better used for more important purposes like medical equipment.
  • I pick up rubbish on my local beach twice a week. Balloons and the ribbons they tie them with are often washed up tangled in the seaweed. It’s so obvious we shouldn’t allow balloons to be polluting our oceans, it needs to be stopped.
  • Just grow up and stop buying them.
